A huge 225.8 million Americans are drivers. But, not all of them are very good at driving.
Are you looking to improve your driving skills? We’ve got the top tips to get you on track to becoming a better driver today.
Leave Plenty of Space
Most drivers don’t leave enough room between their car and the cars around them. To start on your journey to become a better driver, begin by leaving more space between your car and surrounding cars.
Leaving at least two car lengths of space in between you and the car in front of you is a good start. But, you should also consider the weather or any other conditions that may make driving more dangerous.
Defensive Driving Is Key
You need to be skilled at defensive driving if you plan to become a good driver. Assume that other drivers on the road will make mistakes, just like you do.
Make sure that you always have an escape route, in case of a swerve or something else happening on the road. That way, you’ll always be able to avoid getting into an accident while you’re driving.
Pay Attention
It’s really important that you’re constantly alert and paying attention when you’re on the road. Drifting off or getting distracted is a recipe for getting into a car accident. Don’t drive when you’re sleepy or under the influence in any way.
And, if you have others in the car, make sure that they don’t distract you from the task at hand. Distracted driving is dangerous driving, so keep your eyes on the road and stay safe.
Brake Right
Many drivers make the mistake of braking too hard. You should practice your braking technique so that you don’t cause any damage to your car or cause an accident with sudden braking. You shouldn’t be slamming your foot on the brake.
Instead, slowly and progressively push down on the break when you’re getting ready to stop. This means that you’ll have to be a lot more aware of the road, which is also a great skill to have when you’re trying to become a better driver.
Stand Up Straight
Posture is an important part of being a good driver. Make sure that you adjust your seat so that you’re comfortable and can see everything on the road before you start driving. You should also be adjusting your mirrors so you can see properly while you’re driving, and lessen the chance of you missing something.
Practice Makes Perfect
It’s always important to practice your driving skills as much as possible. You should be driving a few times of the week for optimal performance.
If you’re still struggling with maintaining your skills, look into taking a driver improvement course.
The Driving Skills Are Just the Beginning
There are lots of different driving skills you need to be an excellent driver, but practicing these skills should get you pointed in the right direction.
