Innovative Safety Features
The Toyota RAV4 is a versatile, stylish vehicle that’s fun to drive and made for all of life’s adventures. It’s built for play, but that doesn’t mean that safety has been overlooked. In fact, the 2018 RAV4 includes Toyota Safety SenseTM P (TSS-P), a new series of active safety features.
TSS-P is designed to support the driver’s awareness, decision making and vehicle operation over a wide range of speeds under certain conditions. Packaged together in an integrated system, the features help address three key areas of accident protection: Mitigating or preventing frontal collisions, helping to keep drivers within their lane and enhancing road safety during nighttime driving.
Here are some of the TSS-P safety features you should know about.
Dynamic Radar Cruise Control:
Say you’re driving on the highway and the vehicle ahead of you is traveling at a speed that’s slower than your set speed. Dynamic Radar Cruise Control will detect this and automatically decelerate your car, without having to cancel the cruise control. When a greater reduction in speed is necessary, the system may apply the brakes and operate your car’s brake lights. Alternatively, if the vehicle in front of you speeds up, the system accelerates until the set speed is reached.
Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist:
When driving, do you find your car wandering in its lane? This happens to all of us from time to time, even for experienced drivers. Lane Departure Alert can help: This function is designed to assist a driver from unintentionally deviating from their lane. Using an in-vehicle camera to detect visible white and yellow lane markings, the system issues both visual and audio alerts in the event of lane deviation.
On some models with TSS-P, there is an additional Steering Assist function. When turned on, it may provide small corrective steering input to the steering wheel for a short period of time to help keep the vehicle in its lane.
Automatic High Beams:
No one likes to be blinded by the light of an oncoming vehicle—it’s distracting and possibly dangerous. Automatic High Beams (AHB) help drivers see more of what’s ahead at nighttime by automatically switching between high and low beams as appropriate to provide the most light possible and enhance forward visibility. By using high beams more frequently, the system may allow earlier detection of pedestrians and obstacles.
Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection
There’s no substitute for safe and attentive driving. However, in certain conditions, the RAV4’s Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection Function may help detect pedestrians in front of your car and prevent or mitigate a collision. It does this by combining radar technology with a camera capable of shape recognition. If the system determines that impact is imminent, it can issue an audible warning and a display notification. If you don’t react within a set time, the system may provide additional braking force, in order to help you avoid a collision or reduce the impact.

I. Standard Disclaimer: Dynamic Radar Cruise Control is designed to assist the driver and is not a collision-avoidance system or a substitute for safe and attentive driving practices. System effectiveness depends on many factors such as weather, traffic and road conditions. Please see toyota.ca, your local Toyota Dealer or Owner’s Manual for details.
II. Standard Disclaimer: Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist is designed to read lane markers under certain conditions and provide visual and audible alerts and slight steering force when lane departure is detected. It is not a collision-avoidance system or a substitute for safe and attentive driving. Please see toyota.ca, your local Toyota Dealer or Owner’s Manual for details.
III. Standard Disclaimer: Automatic High Beam system operates at speeds above approximately 34 km/h. Factors such as a dirty windshield, variable weather, lighting conditions and hilly terrain will limit effectiveness, requiring the driver to manually turn it off. Please see toyota.ca, your local Toyota Dealer or Owner’s Manual for details.
IV. Standard Disclaimer: The TSS Pre-Collision System is designed to help avoid or reduce the impact speed and damage in certain frontal collisions only. The Pedestrian Detection system is designed to detect a pedestrian ahead of the vehicle, determine if impact is imminent and help reduce impact speed. It is not a substitute for safe and attentive driving. System effectiveness depends on many factors, such as speed, size and position of pedestrians, driver input and weather, light and road conditions.
